At’sa me!
Posted on December 10th, 2003 No commentsNot only did I get listed as a contributor to Opinion Journal’s Best of the Web Today, but I did it for what I thought would surely be an obvious note. I’m the one who notified James Taranto of The Onion’s political debate in Chocolate City between those who say we should “get on up” and the opposition exhorting everyone to “get down”. I can only say it was pure luck, because I had to be the first of many hundreds of e-mailers pointing that out.
Oh dear…my last contribution was also a link to the Onion similar to a news item he had posted! I’m a one-trick pony.

Marv Wolfman on his Superman animated series
Posted on December 10th, 2003 No commentsI remember the Adventures of Superman animated series that ran back in 1990. It was faithful to both the classic comics and the Byrne revamp (I remember being astounded that it would feature the new continuity), it had the John Williams Superman movie theme, and Marv Wolfman was the story editor. At the time, I thought it was great that the animated show’s producers would go that extra mile to employ a Superman writer to make sure it was super-superb.
Now Marv Wolfman reveals that he only got the job because they had no idea he wrote the comic books!
His column also elaborates on DC’s announcement at Wizard World Texas that he and George Perez will be finishing up their graphic novel that was only half-done a decade ago. Marv wonders whether he should finish writing it in the style of the late 80s or redo it as a modern comic. For those of us interested in the craft, this is an interesting peek into how comics are written.
Marv will also be writing more episodes of the Teen Titans animated show. He wrote the episode with Aqualad, one of the better eps from the first season. (I’m gradually warming up to the Teen Titans…or is it that the episodes are getting better? If not for the ridiculous anime exaggerations, I’d enjoy the show a lot.)

Negation TPB review
Posted on December 10th, 2003 No commentsI purchased the Negation TPB at half price at Wizard World and it is really an awesome book.
Negation sounded intimidating and continuity-mired from the descriptions of it. As a book that was “pivotal” to the whole CrossGen Sigil and Firsts and upcoming War, I thought it would be a mishmash. The only Negation story I had read was in an issue of Forge (the now-canceled anthology book that reprinted many of CrossGen’s books from the previous month in a handy TPB format), and it was interesting and exhiting but the backstory took a while to read and I thought, “If this is the short version…”
BUT I picked up Negation volume 1, “Bohica!” (it’s a curse word), since it was only 7 bucks at the Steve Buscemi Guy’s booth. In a nutshell: individuals from all over the galaxy have been kidnapped and taken to a planet where they suffer numerous deprivations and are preyed upon by both wild creatures and the stronger captives. Some of them have strange powers, but the powers don’t seem to work right in that world. And they are unable to sleep until a black tidal wave of energy washes over them and puts them to sleep…during which they have nightmares of being tortured by the aliens that have captured them. One of the captives, Obregon Kaine, a military man, tries to organize them and find a way off the planet.
All of that is explained in the Prelude. I haven’t given anything away, really.
It’s a well-written book with awesome art, believable and approachable dialogue (not an easy things at times in sci-fi), and an intriguing villain named Komptin who has…I guess you’d call them tentacles emanating from his forehead, but that sounds cheesier than it is. Komptin is perhaps one of the few CrossGen characters that would make for a great action figure.
Joe Bob says check it out. It’s not too late to order it for Christmas for the comics fan you love!

CrossGen’s NEGATION WAR Comes Together
Posted on December 10th, 2003 No comments
CrossGen has officially released some info about their upcoming CGU vs. the Negation war mini-series.- The official title will be Negation War Part One.
- It’ll hit the stores in March.
- The mini-series will take Negation‘s publishing spot for 6 months following Negation #27 in February. The resumption of Negation following the mini hasn’t been determined yet.
- The CGU forces will be headed by Sigil‘s Samandahl Rey. Other team members will be Scion‘s Ethan, Meridian‘s Sephie and Ilahn, Mystic‘s Giselle, Sojourn‘s Mordath and Negation‘s Obregon Kaine.
- The mini-series will also see the debut of CrossGen’s first genuine Superhero. He’ll have a spandex costume, secret identity and will protect a city using his amazing powers to fight for those who can’t. From images attached to the article it looks like he might not survive the war though.

Now this is smart marketing
Posted on December 10th, 2003 No commentsI talked in my Wizard World review about PS238.
As I was investigating the site further, I found Aaron’s PS238 Lunch Boxes. As someone who has been trying to sell Cafe Press merchandise for years, I have to admit…these are really smart designs. Not only are they lunchboxes promoting a book about elementary school, but the back carries a warning label that the contents of the lunch are radioactive and they should not be swiped. Very creative on Aaron’s part!
Of course, if I were a bully in elementary school that would be the most awesome thing to steal, so maybe that backfires a bit…
