details on the New Batman cartoon
Posted on February 3rd, 2004 No commentsComics Continuum gives us an update on the new Batman animated series set to launch this fall.
Frankly, having found out who is voicing this Batman… I’m disapointed. I’m not sure I’ll watch the show… and I’m the biggest Batman fan here.

talk to Brainiac
Posted on February 3rd, 2004 No commentsApparently Brainiac has infiltrated the Superman Homepage.
Or Steve Younis programmed a bot. Either way, give “him” a try.

Ralph survives?
Posted on February 3rd, 2004 No comments
It was rumored that Ralph Dibny might get killed off in “Identity Crisis”, the big event at DC this year. But, if one can go by this promo image, it looks like he’ll survive.Wizard #150 will have a preview of this event.
So, if this cover truly shows the people who survive, and the individual who dies is to be one of the Silver Age JLA, then that leaves very few possibilities.
Snapper Carr? Possible, but it seems as though Snapper is the character DC can haul out at any time for some JLA-related goofiness such as Hourman or as an advisor to Young Justice.
Speaking of which…it could be that old team’s supervisor, Red Tornado. For one thing, the title of the book is identity crisis and “John Smith” was never much of an identity. Reddy was better defined as a “husband” and “father” to Kathy Sutton and Traya, respectively. The end of the Red Tornado mini-series in 1985 concluded with Red Tornado trying to choose a better name. I’d hate to see it happen to Reddy, but he’s died before and could easily be resurrected. And it’s that last fact which either (a) makes it likely because it’s a cheap emotional grab, or (b) discounts it because the fans would know it and DC may want a more permanent death.
I think Ron Raymond, Firestorm, is the prime suspect. I wondered why suddenly the new book is about a kid inheriting the Firestorm matrix. Why not Ronnie Raymond? I guess because he could be dead.
That’s where my betting money goes. The only other possibility is The Phantom Stranger.

Monitor Duty Site News
Posted on February 3rd, 2004 No commentsWhat with comic book writing projects, looking for a new job and all, I’ve been a bit busy. Apologies for being away. The “Big Geek Wad” winners will be determined and announced tonight. (I finally have a printer for printing up the entries!)
I’ll also be putting up a new banner, obviously. (Note to self: take down contest banners when contests are over.) We will be offering another contest shortly.
In other news…we need more people to contribute to Monitor Duty. People with interests in different comic book companies, different tastes, different news sources, different opinions. If we have a larger crew here, than we won’t each have to post as much to keep this site hopping. If you are interested, please e-mail me.

AdCritic is back?
Posted on February 3rd, 2004 No commentsI hadn’t realized that AdCritic.com was back in business! Last I saw their site they had suspended ops and posted the standard “We still believe in our business model” message.
I just thought I’d post this for anyone who wanted to see the Superbowl ads again. However, it is now a pay site.

Space Ghost returns to comics
Posted on February 3rd, 2004 No commentsNewsarama reveals that DC Comics is releasing a new Space Ghost six-issue mini-series by Joe Kelly and Ariel Olivetti.
Some would say that this is the first Space Ghost story since the one created by Mark Evanier and Steve Rude so many years ago.
Granted, DC Comics has been publishing Space Ghost stories for the past few years under its Cartoon Network banner but this time he’s being played straight. As Matt Brady put it, he coming out from behind the desk.
Instead of being a Coast to Coast comedy story we have something that has never been really focused on in the realm of the Ghostly Guardian (I don’t care who the nickname belongs to)… his origin. Turns out that it has a Lone Ranger twist (there aren’t that many variations on a super-hero origin to use, so I like the choice) and it’ll start out rather grim and vicious.
I’ll remind the younger ones that Space Ghost was a brutal but-kicking hero who pulled no punches in the sixties. He rarely fired stun bolts. He played for keeps.
There was still sixties sensibilities, of course. That’s not to say that this new Space Ghost universe won’t have a hero of great virtue, but since this is the origin story Space Ghost has yet to become that hero. The sample cover shows you that he doesn’t have his costume yet.
This should be fun.

Can it really be possible they’re making this movie?
Posted on February 3rd, 2004 No commentsWhat else could I be talking about but Sky Captain: World of Tomorrow? Man, I love that title.
Simply looking at the trailer is enough to give ya goosebumps. I say if you’re going to overuse CGI and bluescreen technology, it should be for something like this. You listening, Lucas?
But strangely enough, nobody seems to have linked to the set reports at least two websites have made from SC:TWOT while I was in Vegas this weekend Shame!
Clickety-clickety:
CHUD set report one
CHUD set report two
AICN set report
AICN webmaster Harry Knowles rambles on about the movie’s influences… with picturesReading about the movie would only make me more excited about seeing it, and I’m excited enough to start punching random people as it is, so.
June 11th, baby.
