My Spider-Man 2 Review

12:01. The crowd of teenagers and early 20-year-olds don’t grow silent even though the music is starting. Instantly there is the peculiar smokey smell that I can’t pin down. Must be a midnight movie, all right. The things I do to get timely movie reviews for the Monitor Duty audience.

I’d taken a break from designing a Flash movie to promote my entry in that comic book contest (for which I need every vote I can get, just in case you’d not heard) and caught the midnight showing of Spider-Man 2. Now read my review.

DVD Easter Eggs

DVD Talk has a DVD Easter Eggs Database. I’ll have to try some of these with the DVDs I own.

Such as how to view the “Marcus Cole: Dead or Frozen?” segment on the Babylon 5 Season 5 set.
Or how to see an animated 11 minute segment about the Polymorph on Red Dwarf.

And I’d always heard that there were blooper reels hidden on the B5 sets, but I couldn’t find them. Here’s how to navigate to them on the Season 2 DVD set and the Season 3 DVD set. (There must be bloopers for the other years; I wonder where they are.)

The actor playing Lancelot will be portraying Reed Richards in the new “Fantastic Four” movie. His name is Ioan Gruffudd. If you are not able to pronounce it, try this: pull out a heavy book, open it to the middle, slap your john thomas in the crevice and then slam the book shut fast. Works every time. (If you are a woman…just go look up a hyphonetic pronounciation of the name. I don’t believe in violence against women.)

M.M.H.A. film to appear at festival

In response to Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11, a number of politically opposite filmmakers will be holding a film festival on September 9th-11th (nice choice of dates). Michael Moore Hates America will be shown, as well as a film that radio talker and author Larry Elder made in response to Moore’s Bowling for Columbine.

The Last Zulu strikes: CGE bankrupt

The Pulse’s Jennifer M. Contino recaps the history of CrossGen’s financial troubles up to and including the recent filing of Chapter 11 bankruptcy. All of the staff have been laid off. As Bruce detailed, the company owes $3 million in debts. Mark Alessi is trying to get new investors and relaunch the company.

You might be wondering what the big idea is in trying to even salvage the company at this point. I am going to give my own opinion as to why I think they should.

it’s Grell!

I couldn’t resist stealing from Hutch.

This is a wonderful thing. Mike Grell drew some of my favorite works and is one of the most talented creators in the business.

There’s some sort of circular beauty…. pure irony… that Mike Grell is drawing one of Scott McCullar’s characters.

As for Mike Grell and the fantastic… he also drew John Morgan Neal’s new creation, Rex Solomon! BatNeal’s a big fan as well; he’s a “huge Legion fan. And GL fan. And GA fan. And Jon Sable fan.” One can tell that somebody’s career is going somewhere when their idols are drawing their stuff instead of the other way around.

Stand Up Straight, Soldier. Did You Hear Me, Private?!?!

I came across a great link while at www.4colorreview.com this morning.

It is a group called Dreams N Visions that produces custom GI Joe uniforms. Well it appears that they have produced an “Unknown Solider” version, named after the DC Comics character. The great thing is that when you go to the link you see that they also offfer a Sgt. Rock & Easy Company version as well as a Blackhawks version. They look great! Hats off to this company for offering some fantastic fuel for kids (and adults) imaginations!

There’s a Jurassic Park IV?

Jurassic Park IV (2005) is listed in the IMDB.

I liked Jurassic Park III…it’s actually significantly better than JP2…but I have to wonder what the point is to doing another one. Not that it couldn’t be excellent, especially if they try something new instead of always going back to the velociraptors.

Ray Bradbury wants his title back

Chris Arndt and I were discussing the merits of Ray Bradbury’s contention that Michael Moore’s new film Fahrenheit 9/11 has “stolen” the title of Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451. Bradbury has been trying to get hold of Moore and ask that it be changed for over six months, and Moore just returned his call when it’s pretty much too late to change the title. (I know Moore’s renowned for being a bit snobby, but when gol-danged world-famous author RAY BRADBURY calls you, you return it!)

The movie is due out in theaters soon. The title most likely can’t be changed without a massive and expensive recall of prints and posters. Thus, Bradbury’s hope that he can avoid litigation if Moore will shake his hand and “give (him) back his book and title” is quite unlikely to happen.

Which brings us to our discussion. Does Bradbury have any legal recourse, or will Moore be safe because he can say the title is satirical and satire is covered? Arndt believes Moore will claim satire as his defense should this go to trial and will likely succeed, especially if the judge wants to play it safe in a case concerning free speech.

I, however, think Bradbury has a good case. Not only does a copycat title weaken the originality of his title, but the divisive nature of the film in question can hurt the sellability of the question. I’m not sure how you say this in a legal way, but Moore’s film puts a big ol’ stink on the title, at least to half of America.

And this is even more relevant because Frank Darabont is directing a new movie adaptation of the book Fahrenheit 451. Moore’s film title may hurt the sales of Bradbury/Darabont’s film. People may see “Fahrenheit” on the Marquee and not pay any attention to the last three numbers. This is especially important in that the movie will naturally be seen by a great many people who aren’t aware of the classic sci-fi book by Bradbury, and thus their only perception of a movie entitled “Fahrenheit” will be Moore’s film.

FYI: I should mention that, while I don’t agree with Moore’s politics, I don’t bring this up as though this is news that will sink the film. It shouldn’t and it won’t. One just has to wonder at the sheer legal ineptness of someone who wouldn’t even clear this before naming the film…and one would think that at least one Miramax lawyer would have been on the ball. Aren’t there millions of dollars at risk here?

I may be biased politically, but far more biased just by the fact that it’s RAY BRADBURY. I like Ray Bradbury.

Dodgeball!

Dodgeball opened on Friday. Has anyone on the staff seen it yet? I’m hoping to make it there soon. One way or another, we should have a review in our MDReviews page.

Roger Ebert’s review tells us that many of the best laughs are not in the trailer.

Stop the presses! Roger Ebert has said something that makes me want to see a movie even more. I cannot recall that ever happening.
