Upcoming Comic Book Movies
Posted on March 16th, 2006 No commentsI have stated several times that I believe V FOR VENDETTA and SUPERMAN RETURNS will be good comic book movies, possibly great, paying respect to the works they are based on. Many people have looked at me skeptically when I’ve said this, but they did that also when I said the same thing about BATMAN BEGINS and X2. Sometimes you have a feeling. (And sometimes you’re wrong, like when you have high hopes for THE PHANTOM and find it disappointing
).Just read today’s USA TODAY. They gave V FOR VENDETTA 3 and 1/2 stars out of a possible four (which ain’t something they do too often), saying it was a “bold and thought-provoking” film with “echoes of A CLOCKWORK ORANGE and FARENHEIT 451.” They mentioned an allusion to Pygmalion and how although Hugo Weaving is masked the entire time, you can feel his passion and emotion quite clearly. But their first description was best, I think. “An action thriller that also stimulates thought.”
Well, sounds just like the comic.
And looks like Brandon Routh has a fan who has(had) quite a lot of faith in him. Midway through filming, Rought got an envelope in the mail. It had two pendants, each emblazoned with the famous S-shield of Superman. And it held a letter from Dana Reeve, the recently deceased widow of Christopher Reeve. The note simply said:
“Go for it.”
“She said she thought I’d be a good Superman,” said Routh. “She wished me luck. I can’t tell you what that was like to get her blessing … It’s frightening trying to fill Christopher Reeve’s shoes. I wrote her back but never got to speak with her. Still, it was such an honor. ANd it made me realize how important it is to respect not just the characters in this movie, but the people who were a part of it.”
Sounds like a very Clark Kent-like sentiment to me. If only more people approached their works in such a fashion.
I’ve got a good feeling about these two films. I really do.
