PvP References My Town!

I’m not an avid reader of PvP Online, but ever since Michael started posting tidbits and links to it I’ve stopped by every couple weeks or so when I’m bored to see if there’s anything entertaining.

Today I stumbled across yesterday’s strip, which makes fun of Provo, Utah, the city where I currently reside!

I grew up in Seattle, Washington, but am going to school at Brigham Young University here in Provo. I find this place to be pretty quirky, and Mormons in general are an odd breed sometimes, so I think it’s fun to find other people teasing this place or my religion (well, as long as they don’t get too out of hand, which usually isn’t the case with most people).

And then I start to wonder what made Scott Kurtz think to reference Provo instead of any other funny little city, like Pie Town, New Mexico. I mean, yeah, growing up on the “mean streets of Provo” WOULD be a rather uninteresting premise for a comic since the most dangerous streets out here usually see less action than a couple of roadkills in an average week, but surely there are other places just as odd!

Alan Kistler’s Interview With MATT WAGNER

During my recent adventures at Comic-Con, I came across well-known and well-loved artist/writer Matt Wagner, creator of GRENDEL and MAGE and the man behind the recent Batman mini-series BATMAN AND THE MONSTER MEN and BATMAN AND THE MAD MONK, stories that have modernized two of Batman’s most famous Golden Age stories. Taking place after BATMAN: YEAR ONE, these stories feature Batman’s first encounters with superhuman/supernatural menaces as he fights Prof. Hugo Strange’s mutated "monster men" and an actual vampire known as "the Monk." These stories feature a Batman who is skilled but still a rookie compared to today’s Dark Knight and actually give him a love interest by reintroducing Golden Age character Julie Madison. Quite refreshing, since Batman has not had a real love interest for a few years now.

Glad I wasn’t committed to going to WizardWorld

I got laid off today.

No warning whatsoever, no gossip, no rumors…just having a great day, with my parents visiting tonight and planning to take Friday off to spend with them…and all of a sudden I get the phone call.

“Can you meet with Renae at 2:40?”
Me: “Okay, sure. What’s this concerning?”
“…She’ll tell you when you come in.”
That’s NEVER a good sign.

It’s nothing to do with me. IBM simply had a bad quarter and a lot of good people are getting the sack. So now I’m going in tomorrow to clean out my desk and work all 8 hours because it’s the last income I’ll have for a while.

And what REALLY hurts is that I’ve fought for a year and a half to get a lock on my office door, just like everyone else in every building at IBM. Mine was the only one without a lock, and because of that security would rifle all my possessions looking for security breaches. A week ago, they announced that included in a massive move expense was the money to finally put a lock on my door. And now I’m out.

I’ve spent the last few weeks discussing with everyone whether to just splurge and attend Wizard World in Chicago…even though it would mean driving alone, spending $80+ on gas, getting a hotel by myself…or whether I should stay home and have a garage sale to make some money.

Getting laid off has pretty much settled that debate.

So, if any of you are going to be near Rochester, MN, next Friday, e-mail me and I’ll give you directions to the garage sale.

I have to work on my resume tonight. Later, I’ll post updates as to how this will affect Monitor Duty and what I’ll be doing.

“They Fly! They frickin’ fly!”

I can’t help it but think of that quote from 2005′s “The Cave” when I watched the trailer for The Descent. This new movie looks interesting, and it’s incredible that they’ve made a film with an all-female cast. And to give them credit where credit is due, that poster is one of the most artistic, imaginative designs I’ve seen in quite some time.

As for The Cave, it was a decent B-movie shot both in actual caves and on elaborate sets with skilled cave divers, and it had some excellent visuals. (Of course, Piper Perabo counts as one of the visuals.)

It Came From A Test Tube!

Wanna watch a fun little movie?

Coke Brown a friend of mine just posted a student film he had a hand in in his wayward youth and for having no budget and a really green cast it actually is a fun little film. Coke co-wrote and co-directed it and it has some great lines and gags and great shots utilizing what they had avaiable.

So I was talking to my friend Glenn Hauman and he told me of a story he heard from someone who has spoken to Chris Claremont on a couple of occasions. And Glenn told me that this guy told him quite an interesting tale as to Chris Claremont’s suggestion for an alternate ending to THE CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS.

Are you going to the San Diego International Comic-Con? If so, be on the look-out for yours truly, Alan Kistler. I will be walking around on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and would love to meet and greet any of the great readers of Monitor Duty. Last time I was at the Chicago Con, I snagged me an interview with Mark Waid. Let’s see if I can wrangle anyone this time.

Alan Kistler’s Profile On: CAPT. AMERICA & BUCKY!

There are some characters who are very tricky. Some like Spider-Man or Wolverine can be either good or kinda lackluster depending on the writer. Some like Superman are of a far more precarious bent. They will either be VERY good or just plain DULL depending on whether or not the writer gets it. Not whether or not he’s even a good writer, I think. He can be a generally good writer and still not GET the core of this tricky character, thus accidentally making him a parody of himself in some ways.

Captain America is such a character. Fortunate for us, his current book is excellent. More startlingly, the current writer Ed Brubaker has brought back a lot of Cap history for readers who, unlike myself, do not have a collection of back issues that span his career back to the early 70s. He’s even brought back a character everyone figured was the one person who would remain dead, right next to Ben Parker and the Waynes.

So let’s begin. Let’s talk about the many characters who have been called "Captain America and Bucky."

Chuck Dixon & Freddy Krueger – A Nightmare On Any Street

This October Chuck Dixon will be penning a new Nightmare on Elm Street series for Wildstorm (apparently the franchise will be moving from its current home at Avatar). The intial arc sees Freddy go after a new family. But the father is a former Special Forces member trained in sleep deprivation and Zen techniques who takes the battle to Freddy.
