Farewell, Mr. Jefferson

Here is perhaps the best obituary I’ve seen on him.
Mark Steyn, a great obituarist, talked with Hugh Hewitt about Michael Jackson showing us the price paid for our exploitation of child stars, noting how “Lindsay Lohan is about 22 now. She’s got etched into her face that kind of hardness of a 48 year old woman sitting in a sports bar somewhere in some broken-down loser town in upstate New York who’s been around the town once too often. “

Kryb’s babies
Posted on June 23rd, 2009 No commentsJust got some Priority Mailers from Scott Beatty filled with tons of comics! I haven’t read new comics since last October.
First priority: Catching up on Green Lantern Corps! I finished reading Peter Tomasi and Pat Gleason’s story arc where the GLC goes after the awful Kryb, who kills Green Lantern parents and then stuffs their babies in her skeletal crib on her back.
Here’s the bizarre thing: these babies are TOTALLY forgotten about! All this time, I’ve been wanting to see the moment that a Green Lantern cracks open her ribcage and releases all those babies. But this never happenes. There’s even a moment where Kryb opens her ribs wide to use them as a weapon, and it doesn’t appear that the babies are in there anymore.
Also, the GLs blast her full force, never worrying about the babies.
Is there something I just don’t understand about this?

My review of UP
Posted on June 19th, 2009 No commentsWell, I just came back from seeing it, and to be honest, judging from the first trailer , I didn’t have high expectations. I remember when seein g it originally, I thought, ookay, flying house and an old man, so where’s the story potential? Even the title ‘UP’ sounded lame.
I’m just glad to be proven wrong.
SPOILER ALERTS
The story follows Carl Fredricson, who, when he was a young boy, dreams of going on adventures in a lost land somewhere in South America with his friend, and future wife, Ellie. After many years setting up their dream home, and trying to make their dreams come true, however, Ellie unfortunately passes away. This is all covered in the first 15 minutes of the film, through a series of clever montages, as we see the couple date, get married, build a live, and suffer misfortunes.
I can honestly say that no one can go through this part without shedding tears. I can also say that while shedding said tears, it is difficuly to dry one’s eyes while wearing regular and 3D glasses, but I digress…
Carl, in the present day, is in the process of being evicted to a retirement community against his will. To make things worse, he is being annoyed by Russel, an 8 year old scout trying to earn an elderly badge (ah, the scouting days). On the day he’s to be sent to the home, Carl had managed to inflate thousands of baloons, and make modifications to his house, to float away in the sky, to keep his promise to Ellie.
Unfortunately, Russel stows away, and hilarity ensues.All in all it was a great film. Not as dynamic as The Incredibles, but it really doesn’t need to be. Ed Asner’s portrayal of Carl is on the ball, and Russel, along with the inevitable animal sidekicks, provide wonderful comic relief.

The T-Shirt, The Sale, The Zingers, The Brief Reviews

First,

That’s enough self-serving for now, I’d say.
Remember when I mentioned, in my last post, four weekly Zingers for Monitor Duty? They’re still happening. I got one or two weird character ideas, but I haven’t picked anything yet. If you have any characters you want to see star in the strips, let us know with a comment.
And now, some brief review snippets:
The International: One of the worst movies I’ve seen in quite some time. Disjointed, it expects to be taken very seriously… and then includes a chalk outline at a crime scene. Plus, no real resolution for our hero at the end of the movie. Stay away.
Wii Punch Out: Awesome. Fun. Nostalgic. And they made Glass Joe a challenge. (Plus, if you’re lucky and good, you can take on Donkey Kong!)
Burn Notice Season 3: Two episodes down so far, and yes, the show is still a must-watch.
Friday the 13th ’09: Jason is now, apparently, Rambo. For some, this works. For others “it’s dumb.” The latter folk do seem to enjoy the three-chapter sex scene, however. (Just like the old days, in the 1980s, when kids had lots and lots of sex before the slasher got to ‘em!) Also: Jason runs. Jason is smart enough to set traps. And… Jason throws down with a bow and arrow. So yeah. Rambo Voorhees.
And that’s about all I have at 5:45 in the AM.
