Pardon our pixels!

Monday, December 28th, 2015

Yes, I know.  We’re back to the default theme.  But hey, at least the site is back up!

Back in August, I was informed that there was an infection of some of the WordPress files in ALL of my blogs (including some that are effectively invisible!), and if I didn’t purge the infected files my entire site would be taken down.  That rendered all blogs inoperable, and since then I’ve had a dickens of a time getting these problems fixed.

See…I’m moving.  All of my time since March of this year has been spent packing boxes and decluttering this household.  I didn’t have any time for anything else until December 1!  On top of that, I’ve had to redo my computer with a new motherboard, and reinstalling software has been difficult because all of my physical software is in storage!  I don’t have my audio editing software or equipment, or my video equipment, or video software.  I don’t even have DreamWeaver back.

But I got the site up, finally, with the help of folks at Powweb.  Barely.  I don’t know why, but whenever I try to use anything but the basic theme, it doesn’t work.  I’ll get on that.  But at the very least…it’s HERE!

You know how horrible it’s been having a pop culture geek blog when there’s a new Star Wars movie…and the blog isn’t working?!?!

I know I have a deficit of readers

Tuesday, August 27th, 2013

I know this because if there were people here on a regular basis reading stuff then they would be complaining about the sheer number of embedded videos that I post here.

They would be correct.  If they existed.  The readers I mean.

Now the Trek videos definitely should be posted.  YouTube hosts a lot of interview content and they are pretty poor at saying what that content is or ordering it in any way, let alone sourcing it, granting a context.  It’s arranged like a social networking site.  There is an element of organizing where it tells you what you watched but it recommends other videos to watch based on algorithms and when you search for a particular set of words there are no promises that you will find something relevant.  If I search for Brent Spiner or Patrick Stewart I have no promises.  Therefore I’m indexing and sorting through the nonfiction Star Trek related YouTube videos.  I’m doing it mostly for me.  It would be neat to easily find a given interview with Michael Dorn or Avery Brooks and have the wheat already separate from the the chaff.

The other problem is that assuming I start writing my original content yet again, why should people read it?  Because it is awesome.  That works for me.

The template feels claustrophobic.   And I need to remember what I can do to promote this beast.  Hm.

no more Fresh Hell here

I saw episode 4 and I just don’t feel like putting my name next to it.

Go watch it on youtube.

Beyond and Behind the Trek

Monday, July 1st, 2013

The internet hosts a large quantity of videos depicting interviews with various actors and creators from the Star Trek franchise, including all six television series and twelve feature films, as well as Convention appearances of same.

I certainly have not viewed all of these although I’ve seen a lot.  I reckon that together these could present a wonderful tapestry as to the workings behind all these wonderful programs that we’ve grown to enjoy and has helped us escape from our lives here and there.  Or in the case of some videos and events it is just great fun.

Naturally I’m talking about cataloging all of these uploaded videos.  That sounds like something I would do.

Ch-Ch-Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes

Monday, May 14th, 2012

Yes, this blog sucks.  The stupid default theme has nothing to do with comic books.  I haven’t really posted much in…wow…the last year.  Our podcast links seem to need repair.  So…I have been studying WordPress themes, and I am hoping to implement a new one this next week.

Stupid TV Tropes.org!

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011

I got two and a half hours of sleep last night because I followed a link to TV Tropes.org.

No, I’m not even linking it. Go there at your own risk. That site is like a pop culture form of heroin.

Tomorrow, I will be painting my lawn furniture, and then working on some bills, and then hopefully finishing my Elongated Man piece. For now…I need sleep.

Welcome new contributor Brian White!

Brian White is going to post some things, starting with a Father’s Day piece.  Watch this space!

My pledge: Every Day In June

Saturday, June 4th, 2011

I am posting something every day this month.

Dang, I wrote a humongo paragraph of text after that sentence, and when I hit post it disappeared.  I was already in a rush.  Oh well, here I go again, as fast as I can…

I’ve made a pledge to post at least one thing to Monitor Duty every day this month.  Sometimes it may be after midnight, so don’t get hung up on dates, but every day when you check, there will be something new.

Up next, a new feature I’ve wanted to do for a while: The Keeper Box.  What’s in the box of comics that I’ve labeled “keep”?

Temporary Template

Monday, February 28th, 2011

Our new template is temporary, but I needed to ditch the one that was infected with a Russian hack.  I’ll get the site’s look updated soon.

Comments Off (for the nonce)

Monday, February 21st, 2011

You may have noticed that our web site disappeared over the weekend.

For some reason, this blog’s database was using up a ton of resources on our server host, which doesn’t really make sense.  (I’ll be the first to say that my posting here has been almost non-existent for some time.)  Powweb shut down all of my sites until I could resolve it…which is hard to do when I can’t see anything that’s using up resources.

For the time being, I have disabled comments…except on this post.  My apologies.  I have also disabled new user registration.  We haven’t been getting any spambots here…but I can’t see what else it could be.

This is just a temporary solution until we can see if the problem persists.  Thank you for your patience.  My apologies to Big Blue Arndt!

New podcast widget

Monday, July 26th, 2010

I’m considering a different podcast widget.  What does everyone think of this one?

I don’t want to go on the cart!

Friday, May 7th, 2010

I’m not dead. I’m getting better! I feeeeeel happyyyyy!

Yeah, I’ve had a tough time keeping this blog going ever since I got the dogs. However, I’ve found more time for writing and audio editing lately.

About the podcasts: I feel like I’ve let Erik down. Erik Burnham and I have a huge inventory of podcasts ready to go, but the editing has been lagging. I still have one about reviewing what we got for Christmas…and it’s now MAY. I interviewed Erik about his announcement that he’s writing some A-Team comic books…and now they’re published!

One of the big problems is that my audio editor, Adobe Soundbooth, does not have a slicing tool. This is such a fundamental element of audio editing that its absence is astounding. I have a sound bite from a movie that I’d like to insert into our conversation, right? I should be able to just slice our conversation apart and drag the second half over, then insert the sound clip on another track, right? Nope. Can’t do it. What’s even more aggravating is that the software Soundbooth is based on, Cool Edit 2000, HAD A SLICING TOOL! The only reason I can see that they don’t do this is that Adobe thinks that the ONLY thing people will be editing is the soundtrack to a movie file.

In other news, I’m creating a Zazzle store. Look for some cool merch this next week.

Erik and I will be appearing at SpringCon in the Twin Cities next weekend. Hope to see you there! I’ll be wearing my new Zazzle shirts.

Finally…a new announcement today from Mr. Plinkett:

Oops! Podcast #5 now added to feeds

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

For some reason, podcast #5 was not marked to be included in the feeds. This means that if you subscribe via iTunes, you didn’t see it. I’ve now re-saved that episode and you should see it now.

Podcast #6 is being worked on right now. I’m building the post for it.

Podcasts a’comin’!

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

I’m taking some Lynda.com training to become more proficient with my editing software. I’ll have at least one podcast done by the end of this weekend.

Here’s something hilarious for you until then:

I’ve upgraded our WordPress

Friday, December 25th, 2009

Hopefully, this will help contributors to our site to post videos. All you have to do is paste in the URL of the video and WordPress embeds it.

Monitor Duty is alive and well

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

Sorry to disappear, everyone. We got a new puppy in October, so we’ve been crazily preoccupied with training and classes, and sometimes days would go by where I’d not even turn on my computer! The new puppy is named Chewbacca, by the way. Chewie for short, which is appropriate. In addition to that, my wife came down with H1N1 (swine flu) and was home for three weeks, so I had a lot of chores to do around the house.

Please excuse my absence.

Podcast coming!

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

I’m leaving to pick up my wife while this huge MP3 is being produced.  When I get back, this will go live.

Finally!

Okay, everyone. Fine!

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

I’m on Facebook, too.

So now I’m on Twitter and MySpace and ComicSpace and Facebook and LinkedIn, and none of them are going to be maintained well enough because I’m trying to keep this blog going and I’m not even doing THAT very well!

Could it be?

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

All this struggling with the poor quality of my podcast recordings… could it really be that my Microsoft LifeChat LX-2000 microphone headset just really sucks?

Tonight, I plugged in a headset that my team uses at work, and it sounds nice. Well, dang. I feel like a doofus.

Podcast, coming up! And the next one I record from scratch should sound awesome!

How to post YouTube videos in a WordPress blog

Friday, April 24th, 2009

Update: Some say that only Admins can post…which makes no sense at all.  I’m checking into that.

I was going to make this a private page just for my fellow Monitor Duty authors, but then I realized that there may be many non-MonitorDuty users who could be having the same problem and this might come in handy.

Everyone else can just skip this post. No geek goodness will be discussed herein.

I can’t believe Birds of Prey was canceled. I loved that book. Oh! Oh, right. How to do a YouTube video in a WordPress site.

My guess is that most of you are trying to do it via “QuickPress”, the little area on the Dashboard home page.

Don’t use QuickPress.

Don’t ever use it, really, since it doesn’t offer categories and tags, and I want everyone who posts to categorize their post and, if possible, tag it as well.  Otherwise, I just have to clean up the posts later.

What you want to do is go to the “Posts” section and choose “Add New”.  (Your view may not match mine, as I have Admin level authority and I’ve applied a style to my view, but you should be able to find it.) step-1-always-use-add-new-under-posts When you are ready to paste in your YouTube video code, click the right tab that says “HTML”. step-2-switch-to-html-using-tab-on-right Then, paste in Embed code for the YouTube video.  You can then either switch back to “Visual” for further editing/writing, or hit “Publish”. step-3-paste-in-the-youtube-code Voila!

Oh, you can also use the “Embed Video” icon and just paste in the URL for the video.  I’m going to test that out:

Secret Wars Reenactment Society

Doesn’t look like that worked.  What ARE they smoking over at the WordPress documentation site?
