CAPE 4 (www.capeday.com) takes place on Saturday May 3rd at Craddock Park from 10am-6pm in the heart of Dallas. This festival of comic and comic art includes more than 80 comic book writers and artists for a free afternoon in the park. With several thousand attendees and over seven thousand free comics, CAPE has grown to be the world’s largest Free Comic Book Day event.

“It’s an incredible honor for my hometown to recognize my work and the work of my peers while we reach out to the community for CAPE,” said Scott Kurtz, CAPE host and creator of the web strip PVP.

Kurtz will also be celebrating the 10th anniversary of his web strip PVP at CAPE. The marriage of the two prominent PVP characters will be marked at the event by a wedding guest’s registry book. “I would like to invite all of my fans and the CAPE attendees to sign the guest book for Brent and Jade,” said Kurtz.

This year’s list of CAPE guest comic book artists and writers includes the new additions Daniel Way, (Wolverine Origins and Ghost Rider) and Andy Kuhn (Firebreather and Marvel Team-Up). They join industry giants Mark Waid, Chynna Clugston, Robert Kirkman, Greg Pak, Jason Pearson, Gail Simone and David Mack. With over 80 guests, CAPE! just keeps getting bigger and bigger! For a complete list of guests and to view the proclamation go to www.capeday.com.

CAPE 4 takes place at Craddock Park on Saturday, May 3rd, 2007 from 10am — 6pm coincides with the Free Comic Book Day events taking place all over the world. CAPE! festivities allow fans a chance to interact with top creators in the comic industry, get sketches, talk comics and pick up some fantastic free goodies including 7,000 free comics and much more!

Fargin’ Bastidges.

Cold Cut Distribution, the leading distributor of independent and
small to mid-size press comics in the United States, has sold their
company assets to Rogue Wolf Entertainment.

Retailers can still access the online ordering system at

“We expect to be back up to full speed by the end of February,” said
Lance Stahlberg, Vice President of Rogue Wolf. “We’ve already begun
to reach out to customers and publishers, making sure inventory gaps
with previous Cold Cut customers.

“As a team, we bring twenty-four years experience in the distribution

When the dust settles from the upcoming “Amazons Attack” story, Gail Simone will be taking over the writing of Wonder Woman. Simone is a fan favorite, probably best known for her time on Birds of Prey. Her first issue of Wonder Woman will be issue #13. For more on her and the title, see this Newsarama article.

I got to meet and compliment her at the Toronto Comic Con last year on the way she used Dr. Psycho in the Action Comics tie-in for Villains United. She took a villain I don’t think I knew at all before and in a matter of a few pages moved him to being one of the most chilling people in the DC universe and I just had to share those pages with some of my non-comics friends. She seems like a great writer to tap for this job.

I was able to tour the Marvel Superheroes Science Exhibition now at the Ontario Science Centre in Toronto, Canada. (That’s me in the infra-red colors and also next to the sign at the end of the video.)

This is the kind of thing you’ll like, if you like this kind of thing. I think the two websites I linked to above can give you a pretty good idea of what to expect. There are a few more notes on the exhibit in my Extended Entry.

If I’m not mistaken, this exhibit (or one almost exactly like it) was in Los Angeles last summer. I didn’t get a chance to see it when I was in LA, but I was excited to see that I had a chance in Toronto. The exhibit will stay at the Ontario Science Centre until March 25. After that, it goes on to the St. Louis Science Center, from April 28, 2007 to September 4, according to the exhibit’s website. In addition to the admission to the Ontario Science Center, there is an additional charge for the Marvel exhibit.

Science in comics (or the lack thereof) can seem easy to ridicule, but as you might expect, this exhibition takes its cues from comics and turns them into opportunities to teach. For example, it would be easy to dismiss Johnny Storm, the Human Torch, by saying that there is no way that cosmic rays would effect a person that way. There is no way that a person or any other object could continually combust without burning any fuel. Even if he could, he wouldn’t be able to fly just because he was on fire, otherwise our campfires wouldn’t stay on the ground. Rather than dwell on the negatives, the exhibit designers take whatever cues they can from the comics to illustrate a few fundamental principles. The Human Torch is used as an illustration of how everyone’s body generates its own heat, and your picture in infra-red tones on a video screen is visual proof of that.

Much of the science involved is pretty basic, and taken as a whole, represents a pretty random assortment of facts. When the only unifying theme is a loose interpretation of superhero powers, that’s not surprising.

The most eye-opening moment for me was at the Daredevil portion (no pun intended). It challenged you to make your way through a tunnel by keeping your eyes closed and clicking your tongue to hear echoes like a bat does. I really hate dark places, so I didn’t enter that one, but on the outside of the tunnel was a video that showed a blind man who had learned to use echo-location to negotiate city streets and throughout his life. It showed him in a neighborhood that he had allegedly never been to before. He was identifying where parked cars and trees were and even described a wrought iron fence using echoes from his clicking tongue. The video was old- probably from the early 1980s, and it looked that way. However, the story it told was so astounding that if I had just run across it randomly on the Internet instead of finding it in a respected museum, I certainly would have suspected that it was some kind of a fraud or hoax.

There were also exhibits outside of the science ones that catered to comics history, including a timeline of Marvel history as it related to social movements throughout the last century and an exhibit on the artwork of various important comics creators. My favorite part of the entire exhibit was the video that played continuously in the “Stan Lee Theater.” I love listening to “The Man.” Even though I’ve heard many of his stories multiple times, it’s fun hearing him talk. He is the first to admit that he had no clue about the supposed “science” he was writing about You get to hear him say how he doesn’t have any idea what a cosmic ray or a gamma ray really is, even today. His science is weak, but his best points were made while discussing comics as a tool for teaching literacy. It was quite ironic, then, that the gift shop at the exit of the exhibit had a whole long roomful of items but had almost no comics for sale.

If I was about 12 years old, I probably would have loved everything in this exhibit and wanted more– and I mean that as a compliment.

I was able to tour the Marvel Superheroes Science Exhibition now at the Ontario Science Centre in Toronto, Canada. (That’s me in the infra-red colors and also next to the sign at the end of the video.)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

For information, please contact:

Scott McCullar, Creative Director
mccullar@shootingstarcomics.com

Kearny, New Jersey (July 27, 2006) — Action. Adventure. Aym Geronimo.

Readers of the erstwhile SHOOTING STAR COMICS ANTHOLOGY series have long recognized the science-loving heroine and her team of Post Modern Pioneers as synonymous with high adventure when she appeared in those earlier pages. This August finds Aym leaping into action in her first full length adventure of her own!

The stakes have never been higher as Aym battles both time and trickster. Aym takes on a man called Coyote, who is the world’s greatest thief, in order to recover an experimental and highly dangerous device.

Debuting at Wizard World Chicago, Shooting Star Comics is pleased to present AYM GERONIMO AND THE POST MODERN PIONEERS: TRICKSTER, by series creators J. Morgan Neal and Todd Fox (Booth #3256B). Both writer and artist will also be on hand at the convention in Chicago at the Shooting Star Comics Booth (Booth #S23). You can also visit the official Aym Geronimo website at www.aymgeronimo.com to learn more.

Don’t worry. If you cannot make the trek to the Windy Cindy, AYM will come to you! AYM GERONIMO: TRICKSTER is also available now for pre-order via the Shooting Star Comics secure online store along with Aym’s earlier exploits in the pages of select issues of SHOOTING STAR COMICS ANTHOLOGY (while supplies last). The Direct-to-Readers edition of the AYM GERONIMO: TRICKSTER summer special will begin shipping in mid-August for those who purchase this special edition through our online store.
